Diane Keaton, Acclaimed Actress and Oscar Winner, Passes Away at 79

Diane Keaton, the Academy Award-winning actress, has died at the age of 79, according to confirmation from Dori Rath, a producer and close friend, to CBS News, the BBC’s U.S. news partner.

Keaton, a native of Los Angeles, rose to prominence in the 1970s for her portrayal of Kay Adams-Corleone in the acclaimed “Godfather” film series.

She was also celebrated for her leading roles in notable films such as “Father of the Bride,” “First Wives Club,” and “Annie Hall,” the latter earning her the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1978.

Her family informed People magazine that the actress, whose distinguished Hollywood career spanned over five decades, passed away in California.

For “Annie Hall,” Keaton was also honored with the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical Motion Picture, as well as the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.

Throughout her illustrious career, Keaton graced the screen in numerous other films, including “The Family Stone,” “Because I Said So,” “And So It Goes,” and a series of collaborations with Woody Allen, such as “Play It Again, Sam,” “Sleeper,” “Love and Death,” and “Manhattan.”

Keaton made her cinematic debut in the 1970 romantic comedy “Lovers and Other Strangers.” Her most recent appearance was in the 2024 comedy “Summer Camp,” where she starred alongside Eugene Levy and Kathy Bates.

Beyond acting, Keaton also ventured into directing, beginning with the 1987 documentary “Heaven,” which explored individuals’ beliefs about the afterlife. Her 1995 film “Unstrung Heroes,” a comedy-drama featuring Andie MacDowell, John Turturro, and Michael Richards, was selected for the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival, a showcase for emerging directors with unique narratives.

More recently, Keaton directed “Hanging Up” in 2000, a comedy-drama in which she also starred alongside Meg Ryan and Lisa Kudrow.

Keaton was renowned both for her on-screen roles and her personal style, often characterized by menswear-inspired attire and wide-brimmed hats.

In a heartfelt tribute, her “First Wives Club” co-star Bette Midler shared on Instagram: “The brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary Diane Keaton has died. I cannot tell you how unbearably sad this makes me.”

“She was hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star. What you saw was who she was … oh, la, lala!”

Actor Ben Stiller honored Keaton on X, writing: “Diane Keaton. One of the greatest film actors ever. An icon of style, humor and comedy. Brilliant. What a person.”

Keaton received three additional Oscar nominations, all for Best Actress, for her performances in “Something’s Gotta Give,” “Marvin’s Room,” and “Reds.”

She remained unmarried and had two adopted children, a daughter named Dexter and a son named Duke.

In her 2011 autobiography, “Then Again,” Keaton reflected: “I have assessed my happiness ratio and this is the result. I am totally content whenever the ones I love are happy about something little, big, insignificant, whatever.”

“I just don’t think anyone could possibly have the same wonderful, intense, compelling feelings that I have for this family of mine.”
