Deodorant Company Apologizes Following Reports of Skin Irritation

A prominent deodorant brand, Mitchum, has issued an apology following reports of adverse reactions among customers using its roll-on products, including complaints of itchy and burning sensations in the underarm area.

Consumers of Mitchum’s 48-hour roll-on antiperspirant and deodorant have taken to social media platforms to share their experiences, citing symptoms such as “agonising weeping spots,” redness, and general irritation after product application.

One TikTok user described the discomfort as a desire to “rip my armpits out,” while another reported a burning sensation akin to “on fire.”

In response, the company expressed its “sincere apologies” and attributed the issue to a modification in the manufacturing process affecting 100ml batches sold in the UK, Ireland, and South Africa. The brand has initiated the removal of the implicated products from retail shelves.

Steph Buttery, a 34-year-old resident of Manchester, shared her experience as a Mitchum customer of 15 years.

However, after beginning use of a new bottle of the firm’s aerosol Powder Fresh deodorant in July, she developed an itchy, red rash around her armpits, accompanied by an unpleasant odor.

Buttery, who manages a soft drinks company, recounted having to restrict her arm movements during an important business meeting due to concerns about the smell.

Since switching to an alternative deodorant brand, she reports the resolution of her previous symptoms.

“I’ve been totally turned off [Mitchum] for life. I’m going to go for natural deodorant from now on.”

It is noted that Mitchum’s statement did not include any aerosol deodorants in the list of affected products.

Ms. Buttery is among numerous individuals who have shared their experiences on TikTok.

One user reported an inability to sleep following application of the roll-on, citing “second degree chemical burns on my armpits.”

Another described the development of a pink rash that subsequently “scabbed over.”

A third individual cited severe discomfort attributed to “weeping spots” under the arm.

“I won’t be using any Mitchum products again because I’m not risking this happening again,” she stated.

A Mitchum spokesperson stated that the brand was “truly sorry some of our customers have experienced temporary irritation”.

In a formal statement, the company clarified: “We want to reassure there has been no change to the formula of our products, but we have identified a change in the manufacturing process affecting one of our raw materials.

“This has impacted how the roll-on interacts with the skin of some users.”

Specific details regarding the alteration to the manufacturing process were not disclosed; however, the brand confirmed the issue has been resolved and efforts are underway to “remove the small amount of product” remaining in retail locations.

“In addition, we have reverted to the original manufacturing process to ensure no other batches are affected,” the spokesperson said.

Mitchum has encouraged affected consumers to contact its customer service team to rectify the situation.
