Dawn French has removed an Instagram video addressing the Gaza conflict, issuing an unreserved apology for its content.
The video drew significant criticism, with viewers accusing the actress and comedian of seemingly mocking the October 7th, 2023, attack that ignited the war.
On Saturday, French acknowledged on Instagram that the video presented a one-sided perspective, stating she never intended to mock, dismiss, or diminish the horrific events of that day.
“I hope you will understand my intention was not to offend, but I clearly have. For which I am sorry and I have removed the video,” she added.
The 40-second video, posted earlier in the week, featured French sharing her views on the ongoing conflict. Employing a high-pitched voice, she presented a series of seemingly dismissive statements about the complexities of the situation.
Social media swiftly reacted with criticism. Actress Tracy-Ann Oberman expressed her sadness, highlighting the horrific nature of the October 7th attacks, including reports of rape, sexual violence, and the targeting of civilians.
MP Rosie Duffield, commenting on Oberman’s post, emphasized the need for careful and measured responses to the unfolding crisis.
Screenwriter and activist Lee Kern described the video as “sneering mockery”.
In response, French clarified that her intention was to utilize her usual social media style to convey a message, acknowledging that her mocking tone was poorly chosen.
She reiterated that she never intended to trivialize the October 7th attacks and that her target was the behavior of leaders on all sides of the conflict. She admitted her failure to effectively convey this message and apologized for the one-sided appearance of the video.
Israel’s military campaign in Gaza followed the Hamas cross-border attack, resulting in significant casualties and the taking of hostages. The ongoing conflict continues to claim lives.
