Dave Coulier, the actor best known for his role in the American sitcom “Full House,” has revealed he is battling tongue cancer.
This announcement comes just seven months after Coulier, 66, shared news of being cancer-free following a 2024 diagnosis of stage three non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, a type of blood cancer.
Speaking with NBC’s Today show, Coulier stated that his form of tongue cancer has “a 90% curability rate.” He is currently undergoing a course of 35 radiation treatments, scheduled to conclude on December 31.
Coulier clarified that his latest diagnosis is “totally unrelated to the previous cancer that I had.”
He is widely recognized for portraying Joey Gladstone, affectionately known as “Uncle Joey,” on “Full House,” which aired on ABC from 1987 to 1995.
The show centered on Danny, a widowed father, who enlists the help of his brother-in-law Jesse and close friend Joey to raise his three daughters after the death of his wife.
Coulier appeared in all 192 episodes of the series and later reprised the role in “Fuller House,” a Netflix reboot that premiered in 2016 and ran for five seasons.
In November 2024, Coulier disclosed his diagnosis of non-Hodgkin Lymphoma and promptly began chemotherapy after it was determined to be stage three. Earlier this year, he announced that he was in remission.
However, on Tuesday, Coulier shared with Today: “In October of this year, I went in for a PET scan, just a routine check-up and something flared on the PET scan.”
“It turned out that I have P16 squamous carcinoma at the base of my tongue. So I said to the doctors, ‘Well, did this happen because of the lymphoma?’ And they said, ‘Totally unrelated.'”
P16 carcinoma, also known as oropharyngeal tongue cancer, involves an increase of the P16 protein in cancer cells when the human papillomavirus (HPV) is present.
Coulier said his doctors indicated that his tongue cancer “could stem from having an HPV virus up to 30 years ago,” adding that “a lot of people carry the HPV virus, but they said mine activated and turned into a carcinoma.”
The actor stated: “The prognosis is very good for P16 squamous carcinoma, it has a 90% curability rate.”
He further emphasized, “But the thing that has really saved my life is that early detection saved my life, not just the first time but the second time as well.”
“So I hope you’re getting your check-ups. I hope you get your colonoscopies and breast exams and prostate exams, they will save your life.”
Referring to the treatment, Coulier explained, “The doctor said the prognosis is good, but we’re going to start radiation immediately.”
“It’s a whole different animal than chemo. It doesn’t feel as aggressive, but there are still side effects.”
