Clintons Subpoenaed in Congressional Epstein Inquiry

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton are among a number of prominent figures who have received subpoenas from a congressional committee to provide testimony regarding the late Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender.

Representative James Comer, the Republican chairman of the House Oversight Committee, issued the subpoenas on Tuesday to the Clintons and eight other individuals.

The committee is seeking further information concerning Epstein’s history, particularly after the Trump administration opted against releasing additional federal files related to the deceased financier.

This decision sparked controversy among some of President Trump’s supporters, as well as some liberals, many of whom believe the files contain a “client list” of prominent individuals associated with Epstein.

The subpoenas encompass a wide range of Justice Department leaders who served during the Obama, Trump, and Biden administrations, with the committee also subpoenaing the department itself for records pertaining to Epstein.

According to Comer, Merrick Garland, who previously headed the department under President Joe Biden, has been notified by the committee.

Jeff Sessions and William Barr, who both served as attorneys general during President Trump’s first term, have also received subpoenas.

Former FBI directors James Comey and Robert Mueller will also be compelled to testify before the committee.

It remains unclear whether the individuals named by Comer will ultimately appear before the committee, and if so, whether their testimony will be public.

Federal prosecutors charged Epstein with sex trafficking of minors and other crimes in 2019, during the Trump administration.

Epstein died by suicide in jail later that year, prompting questions and speculation surrounding his death while in custody.

This summer, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that the Justice Department had reviewed its Epstein records and found no evidence of the rumored “client list.” She also stated that evidence supported the conclusion that he died by suicide while in custody, and the federal government would not release any additional files.

The announcements led to criticism from some within President Trump’s base who felt that his administration was not being transparent regarding Epstein-related materials.

In a notable divergence from President Trump, several members of the House Republican caucus have called for a more thorough inquiry into the case.

Comer’s subpoenas suggest that the House Oversight Committee, which possesses significant investigatory powers, will continue to pursue information from the Trump administration.
