Clinton’s Goal Secures Ideal Man City Debut, Alleviating Pressure

Grace Clinton’s goal marked her first in the Women’s Super League since May 4, 2025, when she scored against Manchester City while playing for her former club, Manchester United.

The Manchester City squad was visibly delighted after their impressive Women’s Super League victory at Tottenham on Friday, with Grace Clinton’s joy particularly radiant.

The 22-year-old England international celebrated her debut by coming off the bench to score in the 5-1 triumph at Brisbane Road.

Clinton also contributed to Laura Coombs’ goal in injury time, as her shot deflected into the path of her new teammate.

It was an ideal start to her City career, having joined on deadline day from rivals Manchester United, in a move that saw England teammate Jess Park head in the opposite direction.

Clinton was not included in the squad for the opening two matches against Chelsea and Brighton but expressed her excitement at making an impact in her first appearance as City moved to third in the league standings.

“It feels amazing,” the Liverpool-born midfielder stated afterward. “It takes the pressure off a little bit. Now I can get flowing into the season.

“The main thing for me was getting on to the pitch, making those connections with the girls and getting stuck in.

“I really enjoyed it out there and I am really happy with my debut.”

Upon completing her transfer between the Manchester clubs just before the transfer window closed, Clinton stated on Instagram, external that she and United “weren’t on the same page.”

“She looked happy when she came on and looked like she enjoyed the game,” commented Chelsea goalkeeper Becky Spencer, who previously played alongside Clinton during her loan spell with Spurs in the 2023-24 season.

Clinton’s arrival undoubtedly bolsters an already talented squad at the disposal of new City manager Andree Jeglertz.

“I’m so happy for her because she has been working very good since she’s been with the team and deserved to get minutes,” said the Swede.

“Grace is a great player with the ball, she is working on finding the ball in different spaces and engaging the backline.

“But she is also working very hard to fit into the group and the team, and how we play – that will take some time for her.

“She wanted to be on the ball, she’s playing with a lot of confidence so I’m happy for her.”
