Chelsea’s Philadelphia Preseason: Heatwave Hinders Training

Philadelphia is bracing for temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit for the first time in 13 years.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca describes current training conditions as “impossible,” citing a “code red” heat warning during the Club World Cup in Philadelphia.

The Blues conducted a training session at Subaru Park, home of the Philadelphia Union, amidst 37°C (98.6°F) heat. With 45% humidity, the heat index soared to approximately 45°C (113°F), according to Accuweather.com. Monday’s forecast predicts temperatures exceeding 100°F (37.8°C) for the first time in over a decade.

“This morning’s session was extremely brief,” Maresca stated, emphasizing the need to conserve energy for the upcoming match. He added, “The focus was solely on tomorrow’s game; planning, and nothing more. It’s incredibly challenging under these conditions. We’ll strive to do our best.”

Local authorities have urged residents to avoid strenuous outdoor activities. However, some FIFA Club World Cup matches have been scheduled during peak afternoon heat.

“Working in this heat is difficult, but we’re here, committed to performing our best and securing a victory tomorrow,” Maresca affirmed.

Multiple clubs have reported similar challenges, raising concerns about the United States’ co-hosting of the World Cup next year.

Borussia Dortmund manager Niko Kovac described his experience after their match in Cincinnati as feeling like “sweating profusely after a sauna.” Following Atletico Madrid’s match in Pasadena, midfielder Marcos Llorente commented on the “terrible heat,” noting discomfort in his toes and nails.

Chelsea faces pressure in their final Group D match against ES Tunis following their 3-1 loss to Flamengo. Avoiding defeat is crucial for securing a last-16 berth, potentially against Bayern Munich, Benfica, or Boca Juniors.

Captain Reece James is doubtful due to illness, and Nicolas Jackson’s suspension following a red card means he was absent from Monday’s training session.

Chelsea’s training session at Subaru Park was notably short, with medical staff present. Ample iced water and drinks were provided, large fans dispersed water spray, and the team utilized the limited shade available.

Defender Marc Cucurella commented on the conditions: “It’s an adjustment. We played extensively last season, but our commitment remains; we aim to advance in this tournament.”
