Celtic Secure Loan Deals for Adamu, Arthur, and Mvuka

Joel Mvuka, Benjamin Arthur, and Junior Adamu have joined Celtic on loan.

Celtic have completed the loan signings of Austria international striker Junior Adamu from Bundesliga side Freiburg, Brentford centre-back Benjamin Arthur, and Lorient winger Joel Mvuka, all for the remainder of the season.

The Scottish champions, while sanctioning loan moves for striker Johnny Kenny to Bolton Wanderers and centre-back Stephen Welsh back to Motherwell, hold options to purchase both Adamu and Mvuka permanently in the summer transfer window.

The 24-year-old Adamu, born in Nigeria, progressed through the Red Bull Salzburg academy, amassing 23 goals in 84 appearances for the Austrian outfit.

Adamu, capped nine times by Austria, joined Freiburg in 2023, registering seven goals across 67 matches.

This season, he has featured in 18 games, starting 14, and scoring once.

However, the forward has made only one substitute appearance in Freiburg’s last 10 Bundesliga fixtures, although he did start in the recent 1-0 Europa League defeat to Lille.

Celtic manager Martin O’Neill highlighted Adamu’s “experience of high-level football” as a key factor in the signing.

“He has also been involved in European competition, so we are bringing in a talented, experienced, international forward to really enhance our attacking options,” he told Celtic’s official website.

Adamu stated his ambition to secure a league and Scottish Cup double, while aiming to score “a lot of goals” and “to improve as a player.”

When asked to describe his playing style, Adamu added: “I’m dangerous in the box and hungry for goals. That’s what the manager sees in me, and I want to show that on the pitch.”

The announcement of 22-year-old Mvuka’s arrival occurred just eight minutes after the January transfer window closed.

The Norwegian winger is familiar with the Scottish champions, having faced them in the Conference League in 2022 with Bodo/Glimt, where he played alongside current Celtic winger Sebastian Tounekti.

Mvuka joined Lorient in 2023 but has only made five starts and ten substitute appearances for the Ligue 1 side.

“Joel is a talented player who has a very good level of experience achieved at some really good clubs,” O’Neill commented.

“He will give the squad another option; he is very quick and able to play on both wings.”

Arthur, aged 20, has made three appearances for Premier League side Brentford, including two starts in the League Cup this season.

O’Neill believes the England youth international is “an excellent player, with real attributes, good height, strength, and speed.”

Arthur’s arrival facilitates Stephen Welsh’s loan return to Motherwell, having been recalled as cover during January.

Meanwhile, Kenny joins the League One side after struggling to establish himself as a first-team regular since O’Neill’s return to Celtic.

The 22-year-old Irishman, signed from Shamrock Rovers in January 2024, has made 22 appearances for Celtic this season, including 12 starts, and has scored six goals.
