Alice Capsey showcased her talent as Oval Invincibles secured a 22-run victory over Birmingham Phoenix, marking their first win in this year’s women’s Hundred.

Capsey, the 21-year-old all-rounder who debuted professionally at 16 in this competition, propelled the Invincibles to 174-5 with a rapid 52 off 29 balls. This score represents their highest total in the women’s Hundred and the third highest overall.

After a period of inconsistent form, Capsey capitalized on a strong start from Lauren Winfield-Hill and Meg Lanning, who amassed 54 during the powerplay – a women’s Hundred record.

Following Lanning’s dismissal for 36 and Winfield-Hill’s for 33, Capsey, with only one fifty in her previous 32 T20 or Hundred innings, struck eight fours and a six.

Demonstrating strength in her drives and utilizing inventive reverse sweeps, she forged a 57-run partnership in 29 balls with Paige Scholfield, who contributed an unbeaten 25 from 16 deliveries.

Chasing the highest successful total in the women’s Hundred, Phoenix struggled to maintain momentum, despite contributions of 22 from Georgia Voll, 25 from Emma Lamb, 29 from captain Ellyse Perry, and an impressive 31 not out from Scotland’s Ailsa Lister.

Perry hit Australia teammate Amanda-Jade Wellington for six but was caught behind off the leg-spinner a ball later. Wellington also ran out England international Lamb at the non-striker’s end with a clever flick on to the stumps as Phoenix ended on 152-6.

This victory places the Invincibles, champions of the first two Hundred seasons, level with Phoenix on four points, each with one win and two losses after three matches.

Capsey, a product of The Hundred, initially gained recognition by scoring a half-century in her second match at Lord’s in 2021.

Returning to the stage, she exhibited renewed confidence and aggression, a departure from her recent struggles.

While Capsey recorded scores of 79 and 57 for Surrey in the domestic 50-over competition last month, she has also posted five single-figure scores in six T20 innings for England this year, leading to her omission from England’s one-day international series defeat by India.

A standout moment of her innings was a reverse sweep lifted over backward point, showcasing a return to her best form.

However, two balls prior, she offered a chance with the same shot on 21, but the ball’s power carried it through Sterre Kalis’s hands.

“For me it is such a go-to shot and something I lost a bit of confidence in for a while,” Capsey told BBC Two. “To have that confidence to stick at it, it was nice a few came off today.

“From the get-go I felt all of my options were on.”
