British Teenager Brennan Secures Victory in Romandie Opening Stage

Matthew Brennan previously secured victory in the opening stage of the Volta a Catalunya earlier this year.

Britain’s Matthew Brennan claimed a sprint win on the first stage of the Tour de Romandie, further enhancing his burgeoning reputation.

The 19-year-old Visma-Lease a Bike rider secured his fourth professional title in Fribourg on Wednesday, taking the coveted yellow jersey.

Brennan had previously triumphed at the Grand Prix de Denain as well as taking two stage wins at the Volta a Catalunya.

Ineos Grenadiers’ Samuel Watson, who won Tuesday’s prologue, could not replicate his success, despite support from team-mate and former Tour de France champion Geraint Thomas.

Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel, regarded as a pre-race favourite, finished ninth, seven seconds behind Brennan.

Brennan delivered a standout performance in the warm April conditions, outpacing the peloton in a demanding 194.4km stage featuring four categorised climbs—the longest of this year’s race.

The race continues on Thursday with a 157km circuit around La Grande Beroche.
