Britain’s Alfie Hewett commenced his campaign for a third consecutive US Open wheelchair singles title with a dominant victory over American Charlie Cooper.

The second-seeded Hewett required only 61 minutes to dispatch the 17-year-old Cooper with a score of 6-0, 6-2.

Wheelchair tennis returns to New York after a year’s absence due to scheduling conflicts with the Paralympics.

Hewett, champion in 2022 and 2023, is vying for his second Grand Slam singles title of the season, following his triumph at the Australian Open in January.

His long-time doubles partner, Gordon Reid, also secured a win later on Wednesday, overcoming Spain’s Daniel Caverzaschi in a hard-fought match lasting two hours and 33 minutes with a final score of 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-1.

Fellow British athletes Greg Slade and Andy Lapthorne advanced to the second round of the quad singles as well.

Slade saved three match points before clinching a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (11-9) victory against Brazil’s Leandro Pena, while Lapthorne, a two-time US Open champion, defeated South Africa’s Donald Ramphadi 6-2, 6-3.

In the women’s wheelchair singles, Lucy Shuker was defeated by Dutch competitor Diede de Groot, a 23-time Grand Slam champion, with a score of 6-3, 6-0. De Groot is aiming for her first major title this season following her return from hip and shoulder surgery.
