Rory McIlroy trails by six strokes after Jacob Bridgeman’s impressive seven-under-par 64 secured his position at the top of the leaderboard following the third round of the Genesis Invitational.
McIlroy of Northern Ireland, who began the day one stroke behind Bridgeman of the United States, recorded a two-under-par 69 to move into second place at 13 under in Los Angeles.
Bridgeman, who also shot a 64 in the second round, carded seven birdies and an eagle on the 11th hole, delivering a stellar performance to seize control at the Riviera Country Club.
The 26-year-old, ranked 52nd globally, is enjoying a strong start to the year, with two top-10 finishes in his first four events, including an eighth-place result at Pebble Beach last week.
England’s Marco Penge, who was tied for the lead with Bridgeman at the start of the day, slipped to joint-seventh on the leaderboard after shooting a three-over-par 74.
Penge’s compatriot, Aaron Rai, is in fourth place, eight strokes behind the leader at 11 under, following a 66, with South Africa’s Aldrich Potgieter one stroke ahead of him in third.
World number one Scottie Scheffler, who made a seven-foot putt on Friday to qualify for the weekend, is tied for 22nd at five under after shooting a 66.
