Brad Pitt Praises Silverstone as Formula 1 Film Nears Release

Ahead of the cinematic release of a new Formula 1 film, a prominent Hollywood actor has lauded the British Grand Prix’s home as “hallowed ground.”

Brad Pitt, who filmed scenes for “F1: The Movie” at the Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire, shared his reverence for the iconic venue, with the film slated to premiere this week.

The production team established a fully functional garage within the active F1 pit lane during the 2023 and 2024 Grand Prix events.

“We were on hallowed ground,” Pitt stated, adding, “It was very humbling, stepping into a sport that is so revered and treated like religion. We just wanted to make sure we didn’t get in anyone’s way.”

Pitt, 61, portrays Sonny Hayes, a seasoned driver who makes a comeback to the racing grid after a prolonged absence.

Filming occurred at authentic racing locations, including Abu Dhabi, Silverstone, and Rockingham in Northamptonshire, enhancing the film’s realism.

Notable F1 personalities, including Lewis Hamilton, who serves as a producer, alongside Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc, make appearances alongside Pitt.

Director Joseph Kosinski, known for “Top Gun: Maverick,” acknowledged the considerable logistical hurdles of filming during actual Grand Prix events.

“Usually when we’re making a movie, we are in control of our own schedule,” he explained.

“But when you’re shooting at a real grand prix, we had to work with the F1 schedule. That was a huge logistical challenge.”

F1 has described the movie, partially filmed in real-time during races, as a “landmark for the sport,” highlighting its immersive approach.

Damson Idris, playing young driver Joshua Pearce, emphasized the authenticity gained from the on-track experience.

“It was the most fun I’ve ever had in my life. At those speeds, it really is a freeing feeling,” he remarked.

“By the end of filming, we were very, very confident drivers to the point where we’ve convinced ourselves that we can actually compete.”

Rob Jaina, a former pit lane incident officer with two decades of experience, was invited to participate as an extra to enhance the film’s realism.

“To add to the authenticity of the film, they were looking for people who actually do the role, so I was contacted to play the role of me essentially,” he stated.

Mr. Jaina spent approximately a month filming and had the opportunity to meet some of the film’s leading actors.

“I remember seeing [Brad Pitt] for the first time… he was wearing a very bright yellow shirt and yellow linen trousers and a matching hat. There’s not many people who could carry off that outfit and still look quite cool,” he added.

“It was a bit of a strange experience but fantastic.”

“F1: The Movie” arrives in cinemas this Wednesday.
