Bonmati, Reigning Ballon d’Or Recipient, Suffers Leg Fracture in Training

Aitana Bonmati has earned 83 international caps for Spain.

Spain’s Aitana Bonmati is facing a significant period on the sidelines after suffering a broken leg in training.

The 27-year-old midfielder sustained the injury during a morning session at the national team’s training facility in Las Rozas, Madrid, on Sunday.

The Spanish squad was preparing for the second leg of their Uefa Women’s Nations League final against Germany, scheduled for December 2 at the Estadio Metropolitano.

Bonmati played 77 minutes in the first leg against Germany last Friday, a match that concluded in a goalless draw in Kaiserslautern.

In a statement, the Royal Spanish Football Federation confirmed that “following examinations conducted by the medical staff,” Bonmati was “diagnosed with a fracture of her left fibula”.

Bonmati will return to Barcelona to commence her rehabilitation. This injury is a disappointing setback for the player, concluding what has otherwise been an exceptional year.

She recently became the first player to win the women’s Ballon d’Or three times, secured a domestic treble with Barcelona, and reached the Euro 2025 final with the Spanish national team.

Bonmati was also honored as Uefa’s Champions League player of the season.
