Jobe Bellingham, after a standout season with Sunderland featuring 43 appearances and four goals, has transferred to Borussia Dortmund.
The 19-year-old midfielder has signed a five-year contract with the German club, extending until June 2030.
Sunderland announced the transfer fee as a club record: €32 million (£26.96 million), plus €5 million (£4.2 million) in potential add-ons.
Bellingham, who joined Sunderland in 2023, made 90 appearances for the club, playing a key role in their promotion to the Premier League.
His football journey began at Birmingham City, where he progressed through the academy before enjoying two seasons of senior football.
In an official statement, Bellingham expressed pride in his strong bond with Sunderland supporters, promising to carry Wearside’s spirit throughout his career.
He was also named Championship Young Player of the Season for his contributions to Sunderland’s promotion campaign.
Jobe Bellingham follows in his brother’s footsteps, aiming to forge his own identity.
The completed transfer allows Bellingham to participate in Dortmund’s Club World Cup campaign, starting this Sunday. Their opening match against Fluminense is scheduled for June 17th at 17:00 BST.
Bellingham has also been selected for the England Under-21 squad for the European Championship in Slovakia (June 11-28), though his participation might be affected by his Club World Cup commitments, as per head coach Lee Carsley’s statement regarding player releases.
This move mirrors his older brother Jude’s path to the Bundesliga, as Jude Bellingham also progressed through Birmingham City’s youth system before a successful stint at Dortmund prior to his transfer to Real Madrid in 2023.
In his farewell message, Jobe Bellingham expressed gratitude towards Sunderland fans, crediting them for his development and expressing his enduring fondness for the club.
Dortmund, an eight-time German league champion, secured Champions League qualification by finishing fourth in the Bundesliga last season.
