Marnus Labuschagne faces a battle to secure his place in Australia’s Ashes squad later this year.
Australia has omitted Labuschagne from their opening Test against the West Indies, with Steve Smith also sidelined due to injury.
Teenage opener Sam Konstas and Josh Inglis will fill the vacancies for the series opener in Barbados, commencing June 25th.
Labuschagne opened for Australia in their World Test Championship final loss to South Africa last week, scoring 17 and 22, continuing a recent dip in form.
The 30-year-old, who has played intermittently for Glamorgan in the County Championship since 2019, hasn’t scored a Test century since the fourth Ashes Test of 2023.
“Marnus, at his best, is a vital member of this team. He acknowledges his performance hasn’t met his or our expectations,” stated selection chair George Bailey.
“We’ll continue supporting him in areas needing improvement. We value his skills and anticipate a positive response to this challenge.”
Meanwhile, Smith dislocated his right little finger on day three of the Lord’s final.
He avoided surgery and traveled to the Caribbean but requires a splint for up to eight weeks, potentially returning for the second Test in Grenada in July.
“Steve requires more healing time, so we’ll give him another week’s rest and reassess his fitness,” Bailey explained.
“Josh and Sam will replace Steve and Marnus. We’re eager to see them advance their burgeoning Test careers.
Josh’s sole Test appearance in Sri Lanka was exceptional, showcasing strong intent and pressure on the opposition.”
