Alan Jackson, the high-powered attorney representing Nick Reiner in the case of the alleged murders of his parents, Hollywood director Rob Reiner and Michele, has withdrawn from the case.

The withdrawal was announced during a court hearing. Mr. Jackson stated following the proceedings that he continues to believe in his now-former client’s innocence.

Nick Reiner, 32, did not enter a plea to the first-degree murder charges during his brief appearance at Los Angeles Superior Court.

Rob and Michele Reiner were discovered deceased with stab wounds on December 14 in their Brentwood, Los Angeles residence.

Speaking outside the court after Wednesday’s hearing, Mr. Jackson confirmed his departure from the case.

“Circumstances beyond my control, and more importantly, circumstances beyond Nick’s control, have rendered it impossible for us to continue our representation,” he informed reporters.

“I am legally and ethically prohibited from elaborating on the reasons for this decision.”

The attorney, who has previously represented figures such as Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey, maintained Mr. Reiner’s innocence in the murders.

However, LA County District Attorney Nathan Hochman offered a contrasting view outside the courtroom.

“We are fully confident that the evidence will persuade a jury to convict Nick Reiner beyond a reasonable doubt for the brutal murder of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner,” the prosecutor stated.

The defendant will now be represented by a public defender.

Eligibility for a publicly funded attorney requires defendants to demonstrate a lack of financial resources to cover legal expenses.

Rob Reiner’s estimated net worth was $200 million (£150 million), and it remains unclear who was responsible for paying the retainer for his son’s high-profile legal representation. The accused has two siblings.

When asked by the judge if he understood waiving his right to enter a plea on Wednesday, Mr. Reiner responded, “Yeah, I agree with it.”

The defendant was observed smiling on several occasions during the hearing while conversing with sheriff’s deputies.

His new counsel, public defender Kimberly Greene, met with Mr. Reiner and requested additional time to prepare the case before her client enters a plea.

The next hearing is scheduled for February 23.

Rob Reiner, 78, was a renowned director known for a diverse range of iconic films, including “This is Spinal Tap,” “Misery,” and “A Few Good Men.”

Michele Singer Reiner, 70, was an actress, photographer, and producer.
