Asian Stocks Extend Losses Amid Geopolitical Concerns, Oil Prices Rise

Asian stock markets experienced declines for the third consecutive session on Wednesday, while oil prices stabilized as investors closely monitor developments in the escalating conflict involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran.

Amidst volatile trading, South Korea’s Kospi index registered a 3.7% decrease in early trading, following a sharp decline of over 7% on Tuesday. Japan’s Nikkei 225 was down approximately 2.3%, while Australia’s ASX 200 fell by 1.5%.

Brent crude and U.S.-traded oil prices both saw gains of around 0.5% in morning trading in Asia, after a surge in prices over the previous two days.

The geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have unsettled financial markets, and global energy prices have risen significantly this week following reported attacks on vessels near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz shipping lane.

Approximately a fifth of the world’s oil and gas typically transits through this narrow waterway between Iran and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), but maritime traffic has reportedly been significantly disrupted following Iran’s threats to “set fire” to ships.
