Arteta responds to Arsenal’s loss to PSG in the Champions League semi-final
Manager Mikel Arteta acknowledges Arsenal must produce “something special in Paris” to reach the Champions League final after suffering defeat in the first leg of their semi-final.
Ousmane Dembele’s early goal at Emirates Stadium gives the Gunners a one-goal deficit to overturn against Paris St-Germain in next week’s return leg at Parc des Princes.
It proved a frustrating evening for Arsenal, who were unable to convert any of their five shots on target in north London.
“To win the Champions League final, you must do something remarkable. We have to deliver that performance in Paris,” Arteta commented.
PSG controlled the first 20 minutes, and despite Arsenal’s improved play, the hosts struggled to break down the French club’s resolute defence, marking their first home Champions League game without a goal since February 2016.
“We still have opportunities to reach the final. As I’ve said, special performances are needed to earn a place in the final—and Paris is where that must happen,” Arteta added.
Arsenal are seeking their first final appearance since 2005-06, while Paris Saint-Germain continue their quest for a maiden Champions League title.
As witnessed in previous matches this season against Liverpool and Aston Villa, Luis Enrique’s side once again depended on goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma for key saves.
The Italian international recorded a clean sheet, making five notable saves—including crucial interventions to deny Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard one-on-one.
“Late in the game, we had two of our attackers facing Donnarumma, but he made decisive stops just as he did against Liverpool and Villa. That’s the fine margin in the Champions League,” said Arteta.
However, PSG coach Luis Enrique maintained the goalkeeper’s heroics were part of his role.
“That’s what a goalkeeper is for—to keep the team in the game. That’s their everyday work. In a semi-final, all players are essential,” Enrique stated.
