Ancelotti Receives Prison Sentence for Tax Evasion, Avoids Incarceration

Carlo Ancelotti secured three Champions League titles with Real Madrid across his two managerial stints.

Current Brazil national team manager Carlo Ancelotti has received a one-year prison sentence from a Spanish court for tax evasion; however, he will not be required to serve the term.

The former Chelsea and Everton manager was accused of failing to remit 1 million euros (£830,000) in taxes on earnings accrued during his initial tenure as Real Madrid’s head coach, spanning from 2013 to 2015.

While he will avoid imprisonment, Ancelotti is obligated to pay a fine amounting to 386,361.93 euros (£333,045.92).

Ancelotti, aged 66, concluded his second spell with Real Madrid at the conclusion of the previous season and subsequently assumed the managerial position for Brazil.

As per Spanish law, sentences of under two years for non-violent offenses rarely result in jail time for defendants without prior convictions.

Earlier this year, during court testimony, Ancelotti stated that he “never considered committing fraud.”

Ancelotti testified that Real Madrid offered him a net salary of 6 million euros (£5.1 million), and he delegated the financial structuring to his advisors.

“I considered it fairly standard, as all the players and the preceding coach had [done the same] at that time,” he remarked.

Ancelotti fully repaid the outstanding debt in December 2021.

Lionel Messi, while playing for Barcelona, initially received a 21-month prison sentence in 2017, which was later commuted to a fine of 252,000 euros, with no associated jail term. Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo accepted an 18.8 million euro fine in 2019.

Jose Mourinho, another former Chelsea manager, was fined 2.2 million euros in connection to tax charges stemming from his time as Real Madrid’s manager from 2011 to 2012.
