Ruben Amorim presides over Manchester United, having secured victory in just 35% of his matches at the helm.
Following a protracted penalty shootout, Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim admitted his team “were completely lost” as they succumbed to a humiliating Carabao Cup defeat against Grimsby.
The loss to the League Two side represents a new nadir for the Premier League outfit under Amorim, with any pre-season optimism rapidly fading.
United, who trailed 2-0 after just 30 minutes and were fortunate not to concede a third in the second half, displayed a distinct lack of cohesion in a dismal performance. Late goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire forced a penalty shootout.
After Matheus Cunha squandered the opportunity to win the shootout for United with their final regulation kick, both teams scored with every subsequent attempt until Mbeumo’s decisive miss, sealing a 12-11 victory for the home side.
Reflecting on the defeat, Amorim stated: “I think this is a little bit the limit. I think something has to change. In this moment, we need to focus on the weekend and then we have time to think.”
“[Tonight] I think the best team won, the only team that was on the pitch.”
Concerning his own team’s performance, he added: “I think the team and the players spoke really loud today, so that’s it. We lost, the best team won.”
“I think it’s really clear what they spoke, so let’s move on from this day. I think it was clear for everybody what happened today.”
“The way we start the game without any intensity, we were completely lost.”
United, who have been crowned English champions 20 times, finished 15th last season, marking their worst league performance since their relegation in 1974.
Now, one of only two realistic avenues for silverware this season has closed, following one of the most embarrassing results in the club’s history.
Amorim made eight changes to the side that drew 1-1 with Fulham on Sunday, yet still fielded a team brimming with international talent and valued in the hundreds of millions of pounds.
Benjamin Sesko made his first start for United after a £74 million transfer from RB Leipzig, while Andre Onana endured a night to forget on his return to the starting eleven.
