World number 42, McCartney Kessler, has secured her maiden grass-court WTA Tour title.
Kessler defeated Dayana Yastremska 6-4, 7-5 in a rain-interrupted Nottingham Open final.
The 25-year-old American was poised to claim the first set, leading 5-4, when play was suspended due to inclement weather.
Following the delay, Kessler resumed her strong play, swiftly securing the opening set. A break in the seventh game of the second set appeared to pave the way for victory.
However, Yastremska, seeking her first WTA title since 2019, mounted a spirited comeback. She saved five match points and broke Kessler’s serve to level the second set.
Undeterred, Kessler immediately regained control, breaking Yastremska’s serve once more before serving out the match to claim the title.
This victory is particularly impressive given Kessler’s first career grass-court win just the previous week at Queen’s.
