Actor’s New Film Premiere Follows Brain Tumor Battle

A Welsh actor, Craig Russell, recently revealed a harrowing near-miss: he was diagnosed with a brain tumour during the production of his latest thriller, Protein, raising serious concerns about his ability to complete the film.

Reflecting on the experience, Russell, a Cwmtwrch native, acknowledged experiencing early symptoms while filming. He described instances of disorientation, including getting lost in his own home and bumping into objects.

Protein, a gripping tale of a gym-obsessed serial killer who triggers a gang war, was filmed in south and west Wales, a location Russell championed. He suggested the region to director Tony Burke, highlighting its wealth of talent and stunning scenery.

Russell’s advice proved invaluable; Burke subsequently praised Wales as the film’s “most important character.”

Initially, Russell downplayed the symptoms – headaches and vision/hearing loss in his left side – attributing it to self-preservation. His wife, Kate, urged him to seek medical attention, leading to an MRI scan that revealed a 15-year-old brain tumour.

A subsequent seven-hour surgery, involving the partial removal and reconstruction of his skull, followed. Doctors warned him of potentially fatal outcomes. He credits the NHS with saving his life.

Now a Brain Tumour Research ambassador, Russell promotes awareness. He also discussed his role in Protein, where he portrays a cannibal, acknowledging the graphic nature of some scenes involving seemingly flesh-based protein shakes (actually watermelon, porridge and almond milk) and raw beef.

Despite the challenging scenes, Russell found the “cannibal stuff” enjoyable, recounting a humorous anecdote of crew members becoming nauseous during filming.

Protein opens in selected Welsh cinemas before its nationwide UK release next week.
