Chicago Mayor Enacts Order to Counter Possible Federal Intervention

The Mayor of Chicago has enacted an executive order outlining the city’s response to potential immigration enforcement actions threatened by the Trump administration.

Mayor Brandon Johnson, a Democrat, stated, “We do not need nor want an unconstitutional and illegal military occupation of our city.” The order provides guidance to city agencies on how to react to possible immigration enforcement activities.

President Trump has previously deployed approximately 2,000 troops to Washington D.C., and has suggested extending such measures to Chicago, which he has characterized as a “mess.” Reports also indicate that the administration is considering increasing the number of federal immigration agents in the city.

A White House spokesperson dismissed the order as “a publicity stunt.”

This executive order represents the latest development in an ongoing dispute between the White House and state and local officials in Illinois regarding violent crime and immigration matters.

The order formally requests that President Trump and federal agents “stand down from any attempts to deploy the U.S. Armed Forces” within the city.

Additionally, the order reaffirms existing city policies, including requirements for law enforcement officers to wear body cameras and display identifying information, as well as a prohibition on wearing masks.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers have faced criticism in other municipalities for concealing their identities.

Mayor Johnson affirmed that city officials will assist residents in understanding their rights when encountering immigration enforcement, while also ruling out the participation of local officers in joint patrols with federal agents.

Local authorities estimate that over one in five Chicago residents is an immigrant, with a majority originating from Latin American countries. The number of undocumented immigrants residing in the city remains unclear.

President Trump, a Republican, has referred to Chicago, the third-largest city in the United States, as “a killing field,” arguing that the city’s crime rate constitutes an emergency.

His threats to deploy the National Guard have been characterized by Illinois Governor JB Pritzker as an abuse of power.

Governor Pritzker, a Democrat, stated, “Donald Trump is attempting to manufacture a crisis, politicize Americans who serve in uniform, and continue abusing his power to distract from the pain he is causing working families.”

White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson suggested that officials in Chicago were politicizing the issue of crime reduction.

“If these Democrats focused on fixing crime in their own cities instead of doing publicity stunts to criticize the president, their communities would be much safer.”
